Labor Day weekend is known for having a tremendous amount of drivers on the road and came to rough start at 1:14 a.m. as an Audi slammed into a semi-truck going southbound on Highway 99 south of Pacheco Road.
California Highway Patrol stated that Cristian Ramirez Lopez, 23, of Bakersfield, CA crashed his Audi into the center median before swerving across all lanes and smacking into the semi-truck, causing both vehicles to veer left and crash into the median.
The cab of the semi-truck was detached from the trailer when colliding with the median, while the Audi became fastened beneath the trailer and both straddled the center median and caught fire with Lopez still inside according to CHP. Two officers quickly extinguished the fire, and waited for the Bakersfield Fire Department to arrive with extraction tools, where Lopez was extracted.
Witnesses put Lopez’s speed at 100 mph or higher.
Lopez was taken to Kern Medical Center with major injuries and later was arrested under suspicion of DUI, no one else was hurt during the accident.
