An apartment fire broke out in Arvin Sunday afternoon, leaving 22 people without a place to stay, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze while in the process of fighting a fire at nearby property where more than 50 animals are estimated to have been killed in another fire.

Four units of the complex on Walnut Drive were heavily damaged by fire that broke out around 1:30 p.m., becoming uninhabitable, fire officials said.

No one was injured.

The Red Cross was called out to help families with temporary housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
