Air Force veteran, former BHS teacher Harvey Brockmeyer dies at 102

The community is mourning an Air Force veteran and former Bakersfield High School teacher who died this week at the age of 102.

Harvey Brockmeyer was born in in Fargo, North Dakota in 1916. As a child, he and his moved to Washington, eventually settling in Wyoming.

He attended the University of Wyoming and graduated with a degree in agricultural economics and also taught there for a year.

Brockmeyer volunteered for the Air Force and earned his wings in 1943. He was a flight instructor at Minter Field where he met his wife Laura and they wed in 1945.

After the war, Harvey and his wife moved to Bakersfield, teaching at BHS for 31 years. His FFA judging teams won three state championships, taking those students on trips to Europe.

After retirement in 1977, Harvey and Laura continued their love of travel visiting all 50 states, and nearly every continent.

Brockmeyer was active in local groups including Kiwanis, Mended Hearts and Kern Historical Society.

Brockmeyer died on Nov. 5. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.
