Adventist Health Bakersfield and the Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association are teaming up to offer free cancer screenings.
The Kaur Care Women’s Health Preventative Cancer Screening program is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Gurdwara Guru Dashmesh Darbar on Wible Road.
The event was named after Gurbinder Kaur, who died of cervical cancer earlier this year at 43 years old, organizers said.
Kaur’s cancer may have been detected earlier if she “received a routine pap smear,” organizers said.
The event was planned to help counter a lack of education on women’s health in the Sikh community, according to organizers.
Raji Brar from the Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association and Kiyoshi Tomono with Adventist Health joined 17 News at Sunrise to discuss the screenings.
