A Winter Window Wonderland

News

A local tire shop has spread holiday cheer for 40 years with a handmade animated window display.

“I thought it’d be fun to be able to give the joy and wonder of Christmas to little kids,” said Jeff Jenks.

Jeff Jenks owns Jenks Tire Company in downtown Bakersfield.

His father started the business in 1952.

It’s a novelty shop inside and out, from the antique tire equipment his father used, to the animated Christmas display that sits in the window every winter.

“I always enjoy the next day coming here and seeing little finger prints in the windows, especially the ones that are down lower,” Jenks said.

Everything in this display was handmade by Jenks.

“I started out with a Model-T car that I made and the track.  Then I added the gas station, a pump man and the house and so forth.  I’ve got an Avon gas pump but most of it’s made by hand.  I’ve got to give my mom a lot of credit.  She’s the one that sewed all the clothing for the characters,” Jenks said.

For forty years the animated display has helped make Christmas merry and bright for many in Bakersfield.

“I kind of like to let Christmas be Christmas and not throw so much of the money part of it into it.  Just make it an enjoyable time for people to go around and look at the sights,” Jenks said.

Jenks Tire company is at 908 21st Street in downtown Bakersfield.

Any and all are welcome to stop by and see the shop’s animated display.
