A shocking homicide in Delano

84-year-old Jakov Dulcich made Delano his home for 58 years. He was killed Wednesday on the same streets he drove nearly every day for more than half a century – the sole victim in a car-to-car shooting.

Jakov Dulcich and his wife emigrated from Croatia and settled in Delano in 1960. Since then, Dulcich and his family have become well-known farmers in the agriculture community.

Dulcich was the founder of a number of labels you may know: like Pretty Lady Vineyards and Dulcich & Sons, Incorporated.

Wednesday morning, Dulcich senior was gunned down in his car by another driver. At least six shots were fired into Dulcich’s vehicle while he was traveling south on Browning Road. His vehicle – a silver Range Rover – then collided with a PT Cruiser in the shoulder near Woollomes Avenue.

According to KCSO, the killer didn’t stop there. The killer’s vehicle continued to the location of the collision and became involved in a physical altercation with the driver of the second vehicle.

During that altercation, at least one round was fired by the shooter but there were no further injuries. That’s when the shooter finally fled the scene.

When officers arrived they found Dulcich suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died on the scene.

We spoke with the towing company who cleaned up that scene some 8 hours later.

“The Land Rover was in the fields and the PT Cruiser was almost in the middle of the road. It had visible bullet holes on the window and the driver side near the door.,” said Delano native Augie Martinez, the owner of Delano Towing.

“It just shocked me when I knew who the party involved was. They’re pretty well known I know. They’re good people as far as I know,” Martinez told 17 News one day after the killing.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing. The shooter has been described as a male in his early 20s.

If you have any information regarding this homicide, KSCO is encouraging you to call the Sheriff’s Office at 861-3110 or the Secret Witness Line at 322-4040.
