Officials identified the two people killed in a possible DUI crash on Highway 43 earlier this week.
Isaiah Jacob Sanchez, 20, and Emilio Junior Mendoza, 23, died after an alleged drunk driver crashed into the car they were in, the coroner announced Friday morning.
Mendoza was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the report.
The crash happened just before 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 43 and Burbank Street, in Shafter.
The CHP determined Steven Florez Garza, 46, was traveling northbound on Highway 43 when the car in front of him slowed down to make a left turn onto Burbank Street. Garza went to pass the slower traffic by moving into the southbound lane, while the car in front of him continued with the left turn, resulting in Garza crashing his vehicle into the other car, CHP said.
Two people – Sanchez and Mendoza – were ejected from the vehicle that Garza allegedly struck, dying from their injuries. Another occupant of that vehicle was hospitalized with major injuries, CHP said.
Garza – who also received major injuries – was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was taken to Kern Medical for treatment.
