$1M Downtown pedestrian project focuses on sidewalk improvements, safety

The City of Bakersfield is moving forward with a project to improve pedestrian connectivity in Downtown.

The $1.2 million project adds sidewalks and access ramps, provides connections and closes gaps. It focuses on 22nd Street, Truxtun Avenue, F Street and Union Avenue.

City officials said the Downtown Pedestrian Connectivity Project is expected to be completed in March. 

Last year was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians in Kern County.

There were 42 pedestrian fatalities in 2017. So far this year, 21 pedestrians have died on local roadways.
