A teen is in custody on suspicion of DUI after he crashed into a car carrying five people on Christmas morning.
The crash happened at the intersection of Niles and Sterling streets in East Bakersfield at around 2 a.m.
The driver, Mark Gallegos, 19, ran a red light and slammed into a Honda Pilot carrying five people, according to California Highway Patrol. The Pilot rolled over and landed at a nearby gas station, upside down. A 16-year-old girl and 11-year-old girl suffered major injuries, according to CHP.
Initially, officers say Gallegos tried escaping the scene on foot. He eventually arrived to Kern Medical with a broken ankle, where he admitted to driving the car involved in the crash. Officers say he showed signs of being drunk.
Gallegos was arrested and faces two felony charges for DUI and hit and run.
