Local Vietnam veterans head to Washington D.C. on Honor Flight

Local veterans are on their way to Washington D.C. to see war memorials and be honored for their service.

The Honor Flight took off from Meadows Field Airport at 3 a.m. Thursday, carrying 41 Vietnam War veterans.

Honor Flight Kern County volunteers and veterans say this experience was special because many did not feel appreciated when they originally returned home from serving.

“Being a veteran, I didn’t have a real good homecoming in the seventies when I came back,” said U.S. Army veteran and Honor Flight Kern County employee Tom Stenson. “So, it’s nice to see these people get congratulated by our public.”

The group is slated to return to Bakersfield Saturday evening. Organizers have invited the public to join them at Garces High School at 7:30 p.m. to welcome the veterans home.

The next Honor Flight is scheduled for May 5.
