Hello Humankindness: Retired teacher volunteers her time using her therapy dogs

It’s been a life of giving for 85-year-old June Garbell.

“I think I just felt like giving,” she says. “It just makes me feel so good. It just warms my heart.”

Garbell was a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for nearly 30 years. She retired 15 years ago and continued serving others with the help of her four-legged friends.

Nearly every day of the week, you can find Garbell and her registered therapy dog Gideon — a 3-year-old labradoodle — checking in with patients at Kern Medical, or one of the dozens of other places they stop by which includes schools, hospice care centers, and special needs programs.

Garbell says her only wish is to see others give of their time as she gives of hers.

Anyone with questions on how to have a registered therapy dog, and do what Garbell does, can contact her by sending me an email.
