Marco Torrez

Marco Torrez joined KGET as a multimedia journalist in 2021 after graduating with honors from the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, receiving a master’s degree in Broadcast Visual Journalism.

Marco also attended the University of New Mexico, graduating Magna Cum Laude in May 2019 with a bachelor of arts degree in Journalism & Mass Communication and a dual minor in Japanese and Religious Studies.

Marco has been awarded multiple journalism fellowships that have given him the opportunity to travel both across the country and world.

He was a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship awardee, which allowed him to travel to Japan for multiple months. Marco was also awarded the Bloomberg News Fellowship and was trained by Bloomberg specialists in San Francisco. He was also awarded the first-place prize for best youth reporting from the New Mexico Women’s Press Society.

He worked in Washington D.C. as a political reporter interviewing lawmakers in the Capitol Building, generals in the Pentagon, and government officials in the White House during the Trump administration. Marco also worked as a business and technology reporter for Albuquerque Business First. In graduate school, Marco was the assistant editor and police, crime and justice reporter for a hyperlocal digital publication called Richmond Confidential.

Marco was sponsored by HAPPS, a digital live video media, and created his own live news show called, “The Review.” It was a post-election political miniseries that aired four times a week for four months during the pandemic following the November 2020 national election.

Marco has always been attracted to the news. Ever since he was a little boy, he watched the news with his mom at dinner. She told him it was very important to stay updated on the current events in the community.

Marco has a strong passion for politics and reporting on underrepresented, marginalized and disenfranchised communities.

Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia but raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Marco is a single child. As an avid tennis player, Marco enjoys spending his free time playing tennis on local courts in Bakersfield. Marco also hosts a podcast called “P.O.P Culture” on Spotify and YouTube and has a technology YouTube channel called “The Tech Waddler”.
