The San Diego Padres on Thursday selected
the contract of righty Eulogio De La Cruz, and requested unconditional release
waivers on righties Cha Seung Baek and Shawn Hill, and outfielder Cliff Floyd.
The 25-year-old De La Cruz made three appearances for the Padres this season
and posted a 5.40 ERA. He spent the rest of the year at Triple-A Portland,
where he went 2-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 48 games (four starts).
Baek, 29, missed the entire 2009 season with a strained right forearm. Over
parts of four seasons in the majors with Seattle and San Diego, Baek is 16-18
with a 4.83 ERA in 59 games (44 starts).
Hill made three starts for San Diego this year, going 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA
before getting sidelined with inflammation in his right elbow. The 28-year-old
owns an 8-16 record with a 4.95 ERA and 137 strikeouts to 70 walks in 40
starts with the Expos/Nationals and Padres.
Floyd went 2-for-16 for San Diego in 2009. However, Floyd, 36, owns a .278
average with 233 home runs, 865 RBI and 824 runs in 1,621 games with the
Expos, Marlins, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs, Rays and Padres.
In addition to the moves, righty Greg Burke underwent an arthroscopic
debridement on his right shoulder yesterday at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Heinz Hoenecke and Dr. Jan Fronek. The 27-
year-old Burke made his big league debut with the Padres this year, going 3-3
with a 4.14 ERA in 48 relief appearances.
