New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Andre Anderson's seven-yard touchdown run
in overtime proved to be the difference as the Tulane Green Wave captured the
45-38 win against the UTEP Miners in Conference USA action at the Louisiana
Superdome.
Anderson, who ran the ball 29 times for 105 yards for the Green Wave (3-6, 1-4
CUSA) as they snapped a four-game slide, actually played the hero twice as he
caught an 11-yard TD pass with one second remaining in regulation to push the
game into overtime.
Ryan Griffin converted 24-of-36 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns for
Tulane, while Jeremy Williams collected 10 catches for 139 yards.
The Miners (3-6, 2-3), losers of two straight and three of the last four, were
paced by Donald Buckram who raced for a game-high 234 yards and three scores
on 34 attempts, while Trevor Vittatoe hit on 12-of-26 passes for 226 yards and
a touchdown as well.
The first points of the contest were tallied by UTEP kicker Logan Barrett who
knocked through a 20-yard field goal early in the first quarter. Later in the
frame Jason Williams made his way into the end zone on a two-yard run to make
the score 10-0 in favor of the Miners.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jeremy Williams returned the favor as he streaked to
the end zone on an 88-yard run to make the score 10-7. Early in the second
quarter Ryan Griffin's one-yard TD run put the Green Wave on top at 14-10.
The teams traded scores in the final minutes of the first half, beginning with
a 72-yard TD catch by Buckram and followed by a 22-yard field goal by Ross
Thevenot to tie the score at 17-17 at the break.
Griffin and Brock Sanders combined on a three-yard scoring toss on the first
possession of the second half for the Green Wave, but that tally was followed
by scoring runs of 28 and 36 yards by Buckram to make the score 31-24 in favor
of UTEP.
Buckram had one more touchdown left in him, a 10-yard run at the 5:12 mark of
the fourth frame, but prior to that Griffin and Ryan Grant combined on a six-
yard TD play which meant the Miners held a 38-31 advantage heading down the
stretch before Anderson turned the tide for the Green Wave.
Tulane, which controlled the ball for less than six minutes in the final
quarter, converted 11-of-17 on third down and scored on all five red-zone
opportunities.
