Arkansas State vs. UL Lafayette Game Recap
Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Chris Masson logged a pair of rushing
touchdowns as the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns held on to defeat the Red Wolves
of Arkansas State, 21-18, in Sun Belt Conference action at ASU Stadium.
Masson carried the ball just seven times, leading to 30 yards on the ground
for the Ragin' Cajuns (5-4, 3-2 SBC) as they snapped a two-game slide. Masson
also converted 28-of-40 passes for 229 yards as well.
The Red Wolves (2-6, 1-3), losers of two straight and six of the last seven
outings, were led by Reggie Arnold who carried the ball 10 times for 38 yards
and two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the setback. Quarterbacks Corey Leonard
and Ryan Aplin combined to hit 11-of-24 for 182 yards and a pair of
interceptions.
UL-Lafayette jumped out to a 14-0 lead late in the second quarter as Blaine
Gautier hit the end zone on a one-yard scoring run and Masson tallied a seven-
yard scoring run.
With just 29 seconds left in the half ASU scored on a 36-yard field goal by
Josh Arauco, making the score 14-3 at the break.
Masson's two-yard TD run in the third pushed the advantage to 21-3, enough to
hold off the Red Wolves even as Arnold posted TD runs of two and five yards
and the team converted a two-point play in what became a three-point decision.
The Ragin' Cajuns ran 27 more plays than ASU and controlled the ball for more
than 35 minutes on the afternoon. The Red Wolves hurt themselves as they
failed to convert even one of their 10 third-down attempts.
