Report: Notre Dame QB Golson no longer enrolled

South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Quarterback Everett Golson, who helped lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the National Championship game, reportedly is no longer enrolled at the school.

According to multiple sources, Notre Dame chief spokesman Dennis Brown confirmed the information late Saturday night. Brown cited student privacy laws and did not comment as to why the junior-to-be was leaving the school.

Golson made 11 starts for the Fighting Irish last season as a redshirt freshman and scored 18 touchdowns to help Notre Dame post a 12-0 regular season record before falling to Alabama in the National Championship.

He threw for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns against six interceptions, while also adding six rushing scores on 298 yards.

Golson's departure leaves the Irish with just three options at quarterback for the 2013 season; seniors Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix and early enrolled freshman Malik Zaire.

Quarterback Gunner Kiel, a sophomore-to-be, decided to transfer to the University of Cincinnati before the start of spring practice.

Golson had two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jordan Wolf scored four times and had an assist and Jake Tripucka added three goals and one assist to help Duke outlast Cornell, 16-14, Saturday in NCAA Men's Lacrosse Final Four action at Lincoln Financial Field.

David Lawson scored the game-winner with 6:35 left and Josh Dionne netted two goals for the seventh-seeded Blue Devils, who are making their seventh consecutive Final Four appearance and were coming off an upset of second- seeded Notre Dame last weekend.

Kyle Turri made 16 saves for The Blue Devils (15-5), who advance to face the winner of top-seeded Syracuse and No. 4 seed Denver in the national final on Monday.

Rob Pannell set the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse career points record (354) after recording five goals and two assists for Cornell (14-4), which fell to 0-3 all-time versus Duke in NCAA Tournament play. Connor Buczek added three goals and one assist

Cornell led 3-1 after a slow-paced first quarter, but Duke took over in the second.

An early tally from Dionne cut the Blue Devils' deficit to 3-2, though Cornell quickly responded with two scores over the next 3 1/2 minutes for a 5-2 advantage. The rest of the first half, however, belonged to the Blue Devils, who closed the action outscoring Cornell by a 5-1 margin to take a 7-6 advantage into halftime.

Duke kept its momentum rolling into the second half, dominating the third quarter with a 7-1 scoring advantage for a 14-7 lead.

Cornell fought back in the fourth with five unanswered goals just over seven minutes in, the final two coming on Parnell's record-tying and record-breaking tallies, to get within 14-12 with 8:04 remaining.

Lawson's snipe with 6:35 left gave Duke some breathing room and a three-goal advantage. Cornell didn't score again until with 1:31 and 53 seconds remaining, respectively, to make it 15-14.

Wolf's final tally with 39 seconds left all but secured the win for Duke.

Coyotes agree to long-term extension with GM Maloney

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes on Friday agreed to a long-term contract extension with executive vice president and general manager Don Maloney.

Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are very pleased that Don has agreed to sign a long-term contract extension with the Coyotes," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. "Since joining the team in 2007, Don has done an outstanding job managing his team and building a competitive roster that has produced on the ice, even given less than ideal circumstances off the ice."

Under Maloney's guidance for the past six seasons, the Coyotes have posted a record of 230-172-56 and reached the postseason three times.

During the 2011-12 campaign, the 54-year-old Maloney helped Phoenix compile a 42-27-13 record, securing the franchise's first division championship en route to the franchise's first appearance in the Western Conference Final.

Maloney received the inaugural NHL General Manager of the Year Award following the 2009-10 season. The team finished the 2009-10 campaign with a record of 50-25-7 for 107 points, setting new franchise records for wins, home wins (29), points, and longest home winning streak (10 games; Nov. 21-Dec. 29) while qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2002.

The Coyotes finished this past season with a 21-18-9 mark.

"I am grateful to continue working for this franchise," said Maloney. "We have a strong core of talented people, both on and off the ice, who are committed to building a championship team and a first class organization."

The Ontario native was the 26th overall pick in the 1978 draft, and enjoyed a 13-year NHL career with the Rangers, Hartford Whalers and Islanders.
