MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) — Republican Chris Christie's win in New Jersey's governor's race puts more pressure on gay rights advocates to get a same-sex marriage law enacted quickly.
Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine has said he would sign it. Christie says he'd veto it.
That means for the law to be enacted in the next few years, lawmakers must act before their current session ends on Jan. 12th.
Advocates on both sides have been lobbying lawmakers and airing commercials.
New Jersey is one of a handful of states that offers civil unions for gay couples. But gay rights advocates say many people don't understand the provision.
