The folks behind the X-Prize that launched a privately-funded $10 million race to space in Kern County are now working on a new challenge.

But this one is planted here on Earth aimed at helping with the Gulf oil leak.

We talked with X-Prize foundation chairman Peter Diamandis and Doctor Dave Gallo via satellite Thursday morning.

They are looking for teams that have unique solutions for cleaning up oil in the ocean.

A prize of $1 million will be awarded to the team who has the highest oil recovery rate from the ocean surface.
