A Tehachapi woman accused of running an illegal dog shelter is backing off a promise to euthanize all her dogs. Kimi Peck will defend her 200-pet lifestyle before county supervisors Tuesday.

Peck is a screenwriter by trade and was married to Gregory Peck's son.

She says has quite a script to deliver before supervisors Tuesday.

When she emerged from her home Monday afternoon to meet KGET's Kiyoshi Tomono, she was on the phone with her attorney.

Peck said she hired the lawyer because of what she called a smear campaign launched by neighbors and a powerful Los Angeles businessman working with Kern County leaders, including Supervisor Don Maben.

"We believe Don Maben has accepted political favors in exchange for harassing me and making a political example out of me," Peck said.

Maben was in a meeting in Lancaster Monday and not immediately able to comment.

Code Compliance Chief Chuck Lackey filed a public nuisance complaint against Peck, threatening to fine her $5,000 and up to $500 per day.

In turn, Peck said she would put the dogs down if things didn't go her way in the hearing Tuesday afternoon.

"I have been talked out of it,'' she said Monday. ''I felt I would be faced with the decision to have Kern County Animal Control come up here, pick them up and brutally kill them, which is what they are known for."

Peck doesn't deny her home is now an oversized dog house, but says this isn't a shelter. She said the aren't up for adoption because they are all hers.

"Why are we attacking and trying to kill approximately 200 well cared for, and well financed dogs?"

Peck compared herself to Angelina Jolie and Mia Farrow, saying no one has any problem with them adopting lots of kids because they're rich and can afford to take care of them.

It is not that the animals are unadaoptable, nor is it that there are not plenty of qualified people out there that are experienced with Chihuahuas and yes even special needs and problem Chihuahuas to help Kimi Peck with rehabilitation/ socialization and adoption of most of her so called " unadoptables".... The sad fact is that this woman is a hoarder and animal abuser who has knowingly and willfully violated laws in every community that she has set up shop. She lies, she attempts to manipulate and she threatens when she does not get her own way. I am sure that the good folks who have mistakenly donated money to her organizations to contribute to the welfare of the animals in her care would be agast in finding out that her stance on getting the animals vacinated is " too expensive".

Kami Peck, had the same problem in Burbank CA. She ran a so called chauhaua resuce, howevr she never allowed any of the dogs to be adopted. After the city stepped in they found that the dogs were in such bad shape they were fighting with each other and even in some cases they were eating each other. Her so called "shelter" was shut down, and all of the dogs were taken from her. I am sure if the city does some checking they will find that this is the truth. Kami was called a Horder there and unfortunately the dogs she said she was helping were worse off... It is really sad, that she is being allowed to once again jepordize these doggies. She may say she is helping but the past will show that she is not. I hope that she and the dogs get help.

If Kimi Peck really cared about the dogs who could be adopted, she should make the effort to list them on Petfinder.com (including picture and bio).Peck should accept assistance from the local animal rescues in Tehachapi instead of crying foul and that nobody wants to help her. I realize many of her "pets" may not be adoptable, however, out of the 170+ the furry friends who are deemed adoptable should be given the chance to live in peace in a socialized, loving home. Help is here for Peck, it's just that she has a hoarding mentality; if you look on her website, there are no dogs listed to be adopted; Petfinder.com is FREE and produces successful results. The local reporters should ask Peck how many animal rescues she has contacted and/or rejected.
