Strong winds and heavy brush are making it difficult for more than 100 firefighters battling the West Fire in Tehachapi.
The West Fire started just before 4:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon and continues to burn out of control. So far, more than 500 acres have burned. Fire crews say 30 to 40 homes have been destroyed and there is still no word on what sparked the blaze.
300 foot flames tower over fire crews battling the fire. Anthony Romero with the Kern County Fire Department says the blaze is at zero percent containment. The strong winds are the biggest challenge for crews. Oak trees and heavy brush have also made it difficult for firefighters trying to get a handle on the fast moving fire. Fire crews say those that live in the area will not be allowed back back in until they can contain the blaze.
The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at Old Jacobs Jr. High at 126 S. Snyder St. for those that were forced to leave their homes.
