Next week, California voters will decide whether to approve a tobacco tax hike but a new report shows the state has used only a small portion of the billions of dollars in tobacco money it already takes in to prevent kids from smoking or to help smokers quit.

The study was done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to The Sacramento Bee, the report finds that between 1998 and 2010 just six percent of the money collected from a massive lawsuit settlement and cigarette taxes went to tobacco prevention and education programs.

Officials say that's well below federal spending guidelines for effectively curbing tobacco use.

The report has provided fuel for both sides of the debate over a June 5 ballot measure that would more than double the state tax on a pack of cigarettes.

Most every day there's news of someone and at times an entire family being killed by a drunk driver and the drunk only receives a few scratches. Maybe alcohol taxes should be doubled or tripled to reduce drunk drivers on our streets.

The real point is making people pay more to smoke. Punishment for bad behavior.

This is another perfect example of why every voter in CA should say NO to all bew taxes this year. Increase in Tobacco Tax when there are already a couple of those in place, and those funds are being mis-used or not used at all. Multiple Sales Tax increases, and others when we have been hit with the same increases time and again with no lessening on us. If we keep saying yes, then the elected officials will never even attempt to act in a fiscally responsible way. VOTE NO ON ALL NEW TAXES AND FEES, enough is enough.
