Update: The California Highway Patrol has reopened Highway 58 through the Tehachapi mountains.

Highway 58 remained closed through Tehachapi early Wednesday after the CHP shut down the roadway due to snow and ice.

The roadway initially closed around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Officers worked overnight to remove a number of vehicles caught in the snow. A dispatcher from the Bakersfield office of the CHP said Wednesday all of the stranded vehicles had been safely removed.

Eastbound traffic through the pass was closed at Tower Line Road in Bakersfield. Westbound traffic on Highway 58 was closed at exit 165, the Randsburg cutoff in Mojave.

The Tehachapi Unified School District closed classes for the day due to snow and ice, according to a post on the Kern Superintendent of Schools Alert Web page around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday.

"The mountains will still see some snow through Wednesday morning," KGET forecaster Kevin Charette reported. "But it should be tapering off and clearing out by afternoon."

No estimated time had been given for the roadway to reopen.

Meantime, Interstate 5 over the Grapevine remained open, though heavy snow was reported from State Route 138 to Gorman.  Caltrans snowplows were working to clear the roadway.
