A young Bakersfield boy, who has touched a lot of hearts in this community, got some help over the weekend. We first told you the story of 9-year-old Ethan Perez last month. He's bravely facing a surgery to amputate his leg but last week we reported someone broke into his family's home and took laptops, jewelry, an iPod, and Ethan's new scooter.
When the community learned about the break in, they came through in a big way. The family received two scooters, one for Ethan and his brother, an iPod, and more than 600 dollars in donations.
"It's just amazing to know that people that never even met you could feel so compassionate and care so much about someone they never met," said Ethan's father Tony Perez. "It's a wonderful feeling."
"It makes me feel really special just that everyone in Bakersfield and the community cares about me. It's like a fairy tale that's happening in real life."
Ethan has a rare form of vascular malformation called arterio-venous malformation or AVM. He will soon undergo surgery at UCLA to amputate his leg in hopes of getting a prosthetic so he can play sports.
