Two men are dead following a shooting in a normally quiet southwest Bakersfield neighborhood.
The shooting happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday in the 7800 block of Kamloops Drive. That's in the Laurelglen area off Gosford Road, south of Westwold Drive.
Bakersfield police say one man was found dead in the front yard. He had apparently been shot once. The second victim was shot multiple times and was found in the hallway of the home.
Neighbors saw a car speed away from the scene.
"The car was located a few blocks away. Several neighbors in that neighborhood reported that the man driving it abandoned it and ran from the car," said Sgt. Mary DeGeare, Bakersfield Police Department.
"I mean in a neighborhood where you are supposed to be going 15 to 20 miles an hour, this car was going somewhere between 50 to 70 at least. He was hauling so I couldn't get a good glimpse," said Adrienne, a neighbor who didn't want to give her last name.
"At first I thought awe, firecrackers. Gunshots in this neighborhood? This is a peaceful neighborhood. So I saw a bunch of people over there, and I ran out and I ask my neighbor, hey what's going on? And, he said they shot a couple of guys. He said one guy's dead and the other one had a bulletproof vest and they shot him in the face," said neighbor Joe Herrera.
The search continues for one, possibly two gunmen.
No word on a possible motive. Police say the two victims did not live at the home.
