Teamsters showed up in Boron Wednesday morning in a show of solidarity with the blue collar workers locked out of their jobs at the U.S. Borax plant. Labor disputes regarding seniority and benefits have caused the stalemate. The company denies trying to scale back benefits.
The lockout was initiated more than three weeks ago, affecting roughly 540 full-time employees.
"The Teamsters are always there to help out the labor community," says Teamster Alex Moran of Los Angeles. "And these guys, they need our support. We need to let the community know that they're not by themselves."
The teamsters helped by delivering truckloads of food for the families now in financial trouble.
Regarding seniority, the company says it needs more freedom to assign employees where they are needed.
"We need to be able to promote and transfer people based not only on seniority, but we need to consider their skills and abilities as part of that promotion-transfer process," says Dean Gehring, General Manager of the plant.
Many of the locked out workers appreciate the support from the Teamsters. "It's helping us make it," said Eric Carter.
"You know we got big corporations trying to push all the laborers out, make nothing," said Randy Laursen. "This is America. We all have a right to make a decent living."
