Teachers in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District have another contract offer on the table that could cut 1.3 million dollars in salaries and benefits.

In December, the teachers rejected the district's last offer.  One of the key sticking points was a move to save money by requiring teachers be covered by a spouse's health insurance plans when possible.

The latest offer attempts to save the 1.3 million dollars by cuts to the current benefit package and cuts in pay this year.

A note on the teacher's association website indicates the district could push to declare an impasse and, if the cuts aren't in place until June, it could slash about $1,700 in pay for each teacher.

I have live in the PBVUSD area for the last 35 years and I have seen it go down hill in the last 15 years, it seems most of their teachers just do not have the heart to teach. Along with the illegal problem in this area the schools just are not the same as they were. If you wish to get your child a good education, move now!

It's bad enough my daughters will never experience going on a field trip due to budget restraints; now they run the risk of having a teacher not of the same calibur as those at PBVUSD? Particularly the outstanding teachers at Old River Elementary School? When I relocated to Bakersfield over ten years ago, I researched the school districts as this was a factor contributing to where my family would soon call "home". We chose the PBVUSD based on API scores, as well as other research. We have dealt with increased class sizes (34 children in a first grade class) and reduced classroom aides....and yes, I am a parent who volunteers at the school AND work a full-time job. We as parents in this district cannot tolerate further changes which can (and may)negatively affect our respective children's future education. I would like to know how many administrators have elected a cut in pay in order to address budgetary demands?

Every is getting cut, the people that are paying the teachers are doing without and are getting cut so why shouldn't the teachers fall inline with everyone else. From what I have been seeing from our children entering the work force now days the teachers aren't doing what they are getting paid for anyway.
