I took a look at the methodology and I can't see how aliens would factor into this. The Anglo population is known to be unsophisticated and just left overs from the "Dust bowl" migration. You can still hear the drawl from Oklahoma. Bakersfield is still an Oakie town with inbreds.

This is for two reasons. The first, and primary, reason being that the means of assessing how literate a city is are a little dubious at best. This wasn't a direct measure of literacy, this was an analysis of services offered in various areas. It's from these services that literacy rates were derived. Or, more plainly, an indirect analysis of literacy rates. Worse still, many of the measures used are quickly becoming irrelevant due to much more widely accepted means of digital distribution. This is true for book stores, periodicals, and newspaper circulation. One of the measures mentioned is 'Internet Resources,' but a little more investigation into what the researches felt that means leaves quite a few holes in the measurement process. The second reason I would not take such a harsh stance is that just because Bakersfield was assigned the last spot on the ranking doesn't mean we should interpret it as the 'most illiterate' city. This is just a ranking without any information the spread. It may be analogous to a situation in which every student in a classroom gets and A, but one student gets an A-, leaving them with the lowest score. I know that's an extreme example, but I really think it should be mentioned that being the least literate person in the room doesn't make you illiterate.
