For the second straight year, a new study shows Bakersfield is the nation's most illiterate city.

At Dagny's Coffee Company downtown, those who aren't enjoying a cup of joe are reading. But, bookworms in Bakersfield are few and far between, according to an annual study out of Central Connecticut State University.

The study ranked 76 cities with at least 250,000 people. "I don't think a city this size should be at the bottom of the list. I think that's our fault," said Christopher Borges.

Researchers looked at the size of library systems, the presence of bookstores, and educational attainment. They also looked at digital readership and circulation of newspapers.

"I think it's a screwed and unfair way to assess a community," said Chris Truitt.

Growing up, Truitt spent his summers at the library. "We didn't watch TV. We didn't have social networking," continued Truitt.

Tony Russo is the owner of Russo's Books, one of the last independent bookstores in Bakersfield.

"We don't like being at the bottom, but it gives us room to improve," said Russo.

Russo sits on the board of the Kern Adult Literacy Council, which provides one-on-one tutors for those who want to learn to read at no charge.

"If you can read, it really opens the door to everything," continued Russo.

Bakersfield seems to take a hit in every study. Our city has also been ranked the worst place to live for men, the fattest city, the dirtiest city and the least educated city.

"I think we get picked on a lot. I don't know if that makes any sense. But, I do think that we do," said Libby Letlow.

"Constantly, you're defending your town. I'm okay with that. Maybe they won't move here," said Truitt.

As for the most literate city, it's Washington, D.C. for the third year in a row.

Illegal aliens? You guys are complete idiots, now I know why we are the most illiterate city in the U.S! Damn uneducated, unsophisticated okies go back to Oklahoma so we can prosper.

I took a look at the methodology and I can't see how aliens would factor into this. The Anglo population is known to be unsophisticated and just left overs from the "Dust bowl" migration. You can still hear the drawl from Oklahoma. Bakersfield is still an Oakie town with inbreds.

Hi KGET, I just thought it might be nice to link folks directly to the study in question, which can be found here: http://www.ccsu.edu/page.cfm?p=15607 I would also recommend that anyone who reads it shouldn't take the results quite so harshly. This is for two reasons. The first, and primary, reason being that the means of assessing how literate a city is are a little dubious at best. This wasn't a direct measure of literacy, this was an analysis of services offered in various areas. It's from these services that literacy rates were derived. Or, more plainly, an indirect analysis of literacy rates. Worse still, many of the measures used are quickly becoming irrelevant due to much more widely accepted means of digital distribution. This is true for book stores, periodicals, and newspaper circulation. One of the measures mentioned is 'Internet Resources,' but a little more investigation into what the researches felt that means leaves quite a few holes in the measurement process. The second reason I would not take such a harsh stance is that just because Bakersfield was assigned the last spot on the ranking doesn't mean we should interpret it as the 'most illiterate' city. This is just a ranking without any information the spread. It may be analogous to a situation in which every student in a classroom gets and A, but one student gets an A-, leaving them with the lowest score. I know that's an extreme example, but I really think it should be mentioned that being the least literate person in the room doesn't make you illiterate.
