California's Democratic leaders say the legislature will vote on a budget plan in time to meet Friday's constitutional deadline or lose their pay.

The Sacramento Bee reports the budget avoids deep new cuts in safety-net programs while reducing state worker pay by five percent and taking 250 million dollars counties had expected to receive.

The Governor and lawmakers continued to negotiate yesterday over exactly how to close the state's 15.7 billion dollar shortfall.

The Democratic controlled Legislature of this state wouldn't know a balanced budget if someone threw it in thier faces. This is what you get when you continue to have a over-majority one party rules state. This is why even Arnold couldn't get things under control when he was Gov. But, let's just keep electing people strictly based on the 'D', 'R' or 'I' after their name on the ballot. Let's now take the time to look into these peoples past stands on taxes, fees, special interest programs, entitlement programs. Nah, that might make some sense. Pretty soon the number of taxpayers in this state will have dwindled to the point where there aren't enough to support any of the needs of the state and local govt. and what is going to happen then? We're reaching the point where we have politicians in office who think they can get blood from a turnip.

Murph56, you realy think the voters would cut welfare spending? With the number of people receiving welfare in some form a cut would never pass in an election. That's why the liberal tax and spend legislatures stay in office, they buy votes by handing out welfare bennifits. Now, if only the tax payers were allowed to vote on money issues, your idea might pass.

Let the people of the state vote on cutting these welfare programs Gov Brown, a 80% cut would be about right, I do agree a few are down on their luck but the rest are just life time deadbeats, cut them off now!
