Students at Bakersfield High School were on alert Friday, after the Gang Unit with the Bakersfield Police Department found a suspicious post on Facebook.

That prompted extra officers on campus and dozens of parents to pick up their students.

Police say the post on Facebook stemmed from a fight on campus Thursday. After the fight, rumors of a possible shooting quickly spread through text messaging and social media.

The post said Eastsiders would possibly show up to the school with guns.

"We've had about 20 to 30 kids that have gone home, but other than that we have 2,700 kids that are still here," said Principal David Reese.

Reese says the Gang Unit found the post and notified school officials immediately.

"There's a lot of gang violence and there's been a lot of shootings in the area. There are a lot of copycats that would do the same thing, so I wouldn't be surprised if it happened," said Vanessa Ward, a BHS student.

As word spread of what was going on, dozens of parents showed up to the school and picked up their kids.

Jeanie Bornstein has two kids that go to BHS and said sometimes a rumor turns out to be true.

"In light of Thursday's school shooting in Taft, I'm very concerned. I really don't want to take any chances," said Bornstein.

She said with the latest school shootings, assault weapons should be better regulated.

"I think that we need to have some serious national discussion and some serious action to control this," she continued.

Bakersfield police are investigating the Facebook post and looking into whether it's gang-related.

Extra police officers were on hand after school to make sure students and faculty were safe.

If you have information regarding the Facebook post, call the BPD at 327-7111.

Viper arm the teacher???? I think not! Some of them are "mental" too. How about kids getting taught by parents right from wrong. Teaching them respect & Talking to them.Half parents don't talk to thier kids.

People just do not get it, it's not the weapon that kills, it's the nut case that could kill with a knife, tire iron or even a two by four before someone could stop them if they jump into a crowd and just started in! Now if a sane person had the gun they sure could stop the nut case in their tracks!

BHS has to be most violent school in town! Almost every day when I'm coming home from work in the 3 o clock hour, There is a huge crowd of kids watching a fight near the campus, Most of the time at the Taco Fresco parking lot. Kids go crazy over that. I can't tell you how many times I've almost hit one of them who dart into traffic so they can get front row "seats" to the fight.

You People need to grow up and be responsible decision makers. Right now you are a dissapointment and looking for a scapegoat to take the light off the school district and Mental facilities that have failed the safety of the Public by letting a KNOWN Mentally challenged individual with proven intentions go BACK to the SCHOOL!!ITS YOUR FAULT!!! NOT the GUNS!! you cleared him to come back KNOWING he was capable and had intentions!!
