Kern County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the death of a 15 day old boy. Sheriff's detectives are calling the infant's death suspicious. Deputies were called to an east Bakersfield apartment early Friday morning on a report that Jael Valencia was not breathing. When they arrived, they found the baby boy with blood in his mouth and around his nose. Jael was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"Based on the blood being found in the mouth, detectives assigned to homicide unit were dispatched to the scene and are currently conducting an investigation, at this point we believe it is a suspicious death," said Sheriff's Commander Dan Leper.
Sheriff's detectives say both parents and the mother's other children were home when deputies arrived. The home was searched and detectives interviewed both parents Friday afternoon and say both were cooperative.
A neighbor we talked to says she doesn't know the mother well, but had spoken to her recently. "It's horrible that something like that could happen. I just remember her telling me once that her baby had been born sick and I don't know if that has something to do with it," said neighbor Yadira Moreno.
An autopsy was performed Friday afternoon, and no signs of trauma were found, however a cause of death is yet to be determined. No arrests have been made.
