The Kern County Coroner released the name of a 71-year-old Shafter woman who died after being attacked outside a Bakersfield supermarket Sunday evening.

Authorities said Guadalupe Ramos fell during the attack and later died after a robber grabbed her necklace.

On Monday afternoon, police said they were checking surveillance video from the supermarket, hoping it will help their investigation.

With the only other lead a vague description of the attacker, residents who live in the area are losing hope that police will make an arrest.

"It's kind of scary, kind of scary," said Gloria Gonzalez who lives near the Foods Co. on Haley Street. "It makes me leery of shopping here at night."

"I was horrified because I just came down here yesterday to go shopping," said Bea Turner, who lives in the area and shops here all the time.

According to Bakersfield Police, an African American man, 5'8" or 5'9", approached the elderly woman from behind as she left the grocery store.

Authorities said the attacker grabbed her necklace, which caused her to fall and later die.

"Usually I wear jewelry, and I thought from now on, I am not going to wear any jewelry," said Turner.

Turner said this attack makes her nervous, especially since there was a murder at College Gardens Apartments just across the street, about two weeks ago.

"It's getting scary all over, no matter where you go. It doesn't matter. It's getting bad," said Turner.

Gonzalez said she's avoiding this store after dark. "I don't shop here at night because of the fact of the light seems a bit dimmer."

Authorities said the robber ran away and was seen leaving in a 1990s silver sedan.

People talk smack about the BPD until something like this occurs. BPD will find these gang members hiding in there mom's bedroom with a cheap necklace.
