The fate of Governor Jerry Brown's tax initiative hit close to home last night. If the tax increase measure fails, K-through-12 education will get hit for billions more in budget cuts.
That was the topic of discussion at the Fruitvale School District. All employees not represented by unions - the administration, management, and support staff - have agreed to budget now for anticipated work furloughs and have the lost pay deducted out of their paychecks over a 12 month period, rather than deeper deductions over a shorter period of time.
The district is talking with its two unions representing teachers and classified employees to see how they want to deal with furloughs if they are needed.
