The White House confirms President Obama will be in Kern County on Monday, October 8th.

He's coming to announce a national monument honoring the late César Chávez and his work in Keene.

Right now, it's not clear if the public will have a chance to see the President or the dedication. The White House tells 17 News, the final details on the President's visit are not finalized.

César Chávez spent the later years of his life in La Paz in Keene, where he lived, worked, and was laid to rest.

President Obama is honoring Chavez's legacy, giving a voice to farmworkers across the nation with this monument. The process has taken more than six years to complete, but the family thinks the time was worth it.

"We are very excited to have the President come and visit and to issue the proclamation. We think that it's fitting. I think it's a tribute to not only my father, but to the work of hundreds of thousands of people who get up every morning and work in the most difficult situations and are not paid a just wage," said Paul Chavez, Cesar Chavez's son.

Paul Chavez and the White House say they have no set details of the President's trip yet, including whether the public will be able to attend the dedication or if it will be limited to only a select group. "We will be meeting with folks from the White House advance team and Secret Service this afternoon. We will talk about things as mundane as where do you park cars, where do the bathrooms go, where is the event to be held, the stage, and who's going to speak."

César Chávez co-founded the United Farm Workers of America.

The group continues to fight for farmworker rights and they hope everyone who wants to attend will be able to do so.

Wow, seriously, DesG85? You’ll probably “Unfriend” me on Facebook. . . . but look at it this way. Something can look LOGICAL and not be LOGICAL. We’ve had 4-years of Obama-speak. The President is telling us to give him another 4-years at the White House. We have seen what his administration is capable of. Is this LOGICAL? Four more years of woe and insanity? The President has proven that ALL PRESIDENTS are the same and have the Drain Pipe as the rest of us idiots, irregardless of Race, Color, or Creed. But there is one exception, I have a verifiable birth certificate that says I was born in America.

Wow, seriously?! All who have commented before me seem like close minded idiots. Of course a current president would want to be a part of this. Even if it were a republican president, I bet you he would be here too. Anything Obama does is "disgusting" to you idiots. Get over yourselves. Grow up and really pay attention to what's going on. And get over the idea that he's anti-american. You all seem as anti-american as they get with your negativity about our current president. Democrat or Republican, all presidents deserve respect. Idiots.

It said this took 6 years to get to, so Obama wasn't even part of it...he's just looking for the hispaic votes. Anyone who voted or will vote for this guy is anti-american, in my opinion. Way to elect a Muslim to run our country, which was founded and the framework was directly based on Christianity. As far as the UFW, that is the biggest joke of a union. The members receive absolutely nothing except learning how to be lazy on the job. I worked/supervised/managed alongside that union for 10+ years and it is a shame how corrupt it is. They would have received the exact same benefits if there was no union, in fact they bring home less because now they have to pay dues. All that union did was raise the price of all field grown commodities. It's the people that run the union, like Chavez, that received all the benefits. They were the ones making the loads of money, while the actual workers are still at minimum wage or slightly higher. And anyone that thinks Chavez is a "hero" or "great", are extremely mislead and blind to what actually happened. He was a money grubbing person that took advantage of the field workers to make himself a crapload of money. Do you know that all those workers have to work one day a year and not get paid for it? They have to give that day's pay to the union, for Union Appreciation Day. That is alongside the dues that they have to pay also. That union is a scam and one reason the illegal population is still growing. Those illegals hide in the union with fake documents that the union doesn't validate. It's a shame that the public was duped by Chavez and is still being duped by those now in power. Vote American and get this sad excuse of a President out of power.

Figures, he is looking for more hispanic votes! It's disgusting the way he kisses the rears of the hispanics, illegals and all in this country to get votes! As for honoring Chavez that is BS also, I know what Chavez was and he could have done without him!

Of course he's coming for this 'dog and pony show', he wants to do anything he can to win re-election. He could have done this at any time in the last 4 years, but votes weren't important before now. And the sheeple will be there in mass.
