Bakersfield's Relay For Life is a combination of somber ceremonies, live entertainment, and silly contests. The "Dude looks like a lady" contest has always been a crowd favorite. However, the dudes won't be returning to the stage this year.
Every year, dozens of men would take the stage dressed as women, but this year the contest has been canceled. It's a Relay favorite for many. Men taking the stage, dressed in bright colored wigs and dresses. After more than a ten-year run, the dudes have said goodbye.
"We know a lot of people are used to the "Dude looks like a lady" contest, but this year we decided to do something new," said Brent Michaels, Relay For Life organizer. "A lot of the high schools are doing air band competitions, so we thought this year we're doing an air band competition, all ages that people can sign up for both Friday Night, today and tomorrow morning on the day of Relay."
In addition to the new entertainment, Relay For Life is at a new location. Organizers are hoping to avoid any traffic delays this year, at the new site just east of Meadows Field Airport. It's on the southwest corner of Merle Haggard and Airport Drives. There is plenty of parking for everyone, but remember to leave early.
Relay For Life starts Saturday at 9 a.m. KGET will have a special one-hour live broadcast from from 5 to 6 p.m.
