Pollsters say they've never seen anything like it, and say the results point to the changing public mood on guns. A new survey released Tuesday shows overwhelming support here in the Southern Valley for background checks for all gun buyers.
The poll was commissioned by "Mayors against Illegal Guns," formed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, following the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It was a random telephone survey of likely voters, ages 18-to-65.
In the 23rd congressional district, represented by Kevin McCarthy, 88% of the likely voters surveyed favor requiring every gun buyer to pass a criminal background check before purchasing a firearm.
Among those surveyed in the 21st congressional district, represented by David Valadao, 85% of respondents favor the requirement.
And on a sidenote here, we looked at the membership of "Mayors Against Illegal Guns." And none of the mayors of the Central Valley's eight major cities is a member of that group.
