The Pledge of Allegiance is creating a controversy in Lamont. Not the pledge itself, but the language it is recited in.

Elementary students in the Lamont School District recite the pledge in both English and Spanish. Some teachers aren't happy about it.

It is a pledge of loyalty and allegiance to the United States of America. But, in Lamont, some take offense that the Pledge of Allegiance is recited in a language other than English.

"I think you offer a great way for students to feel included, and it's the Pledge of Allegiance, no greater honor than to be able to say the Pledge of Allegiance in a second language," said Fred Molina, Principal, Alicante School.

Since 2002, all students in the district's three elementary schools have recited the Pledge in English and Spanish. It is a tradition for a city that is 97% Hispanic.

"We haven't had any complaints from anyone about this issue. We feel it's a very positive thing for our district," said Ricardo Robles, Assistant Superintendent.

Since 2002, 35% of students have been part of a bilingual program where instruction is 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. But, the Pledge is recited by all students, including those who only speak English.

"One of the issues with it being in Spanish is that not everyone got a chance to voice their opinion doing it that way. Every time it was brought up for discussion, it was set aside and we never got a chance to vote for it or even discuss it any further," said Barry Champagne, teacher.

The Assistant Superintendent says he was unaware of the concerns from teachers and the district plans to meet with teachers before deciding whether to make any changes.

Does that supv. last name lead to bias? Is there some way mexico must have their pledge in english also? Or is this a one way street again by biased people want us to be like mexico? If it is that great, why are they here? Why not go there and make mexico the way they want it? I am sorry we have elected/appointed people to office that do not care about america or our way of life. That's interesting in that illegals came here because of the way of life there. If they do manage to change america, they will have what they left, where will they go then?

The Mexicans were the hybrid offspring of Spanish and Native Inhabitants of Central America. When they wish to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, they forget that if not for the US Army the following year, they'd all most likely be speaking French today.

RVLADY & VET66 How about taking grammar classes? Please do not call others "ignorant" when you are not educated! I am not surprise by your responses either, we are "Bakersfield" the least educated city in the nation, therefore I understand that you are not capable to open your mind when you are blinded by ignorance.

While I do not like the idea of the pledge of allegiance being recited in Spanish, our country does not have a set language. Yes the Constitution was written in English, but nothing says what our country's language is. The other thing that we have to remember is that the southwestern states were originally part of Mexico so when people talk about overseas foreigners coming here and not getting accomodations, you still have to remember that the "Mexicans" were actually here first. I am not saying that the Pledge of Allegiance being recited in Spanish is right, but we need to find a solution rather than just raising a stink about it. I feel that if you come to the US, you should learn English. My dentist who is from the middle east once complained to me about people not knowing English. He said, "when I came here I had to learn English, so everyone else should too; no accomodations." He made a good point. The key is to find a way to filter out the people who come here illegally since the people who want to be here and be part of this country the right way take the right steps in doing so.

Maybe somebody at this school district can read. The Constitution of the State of California, Article 3, Section 6 states that ENGLISH is the offical language of the State of California. In 1986 Proprosition 63 was was passed as well to make ENGLISH the offical language. Looks like a bunch of out of control teahers need to be investigated for not follow the law and the State Superintendent of Schools needs to pull state funding from the school district until this matter is settled.
