Once again, you folks have totally mis reported this incident. You state; "He had restored it but, the FAA said, he wasn’t thoroughly checked out on the plane. The FAA said pilot instructor Douglas Gilliss signed a license document that said he had been on a test flight with Zweigle, and Zweigle knew how to fly the plane." Dave Zwiegle WAS checked out and was type rated on the L-29. You people SHOULD HAVE looked up his pilot's certificate information through the freedom of information act and you would have seen it in black and white. What was in question was the two year required check ride required for ALL pilots by the FAA. There were several witnesses who saw Bob Chamberlain give Dave Zwiegle his flight review the day prior to the accident, and Bob Chamberlain was qualified to do Dave Zweigle's flight review. Doug Gilliss left behind a pre-printed adhesive label that he was planning to use for Dave's flight review as he was planning to be the one to give Dave his flight review. Doug should have thrown the label away and that's what the FAA hung him on - a piece of paper that had no bearing on this crash. This check ride is/was no “test flight.” I will state once again to you folks at 17 - DAVE ZWEIGLE WAS CHECK OUT IN HIS L-29. This was a very tragic accident that took two very good men away from us and ruined the career of a third because some beaucrat saw it fit to use Dou Gillis as a scapegoat! Please learn to get your facts straight, it will avoid you folks from looking like total buffoons to those who have been following this terrible accident.
