PG&E wants to raise its rates to upgrade its gas and electricity systems. The proposal would raise customers' bills by as much as 12 dollars per month.
The utility says much of the money would go to replace older gas lines, install leak detection systems, and make other upgrades.
The proposal must still be approved.
PG&E has come under fire for poor management of its aging network of gas pipelines. Now they say hundreds of its pipelines are in danger of failing like the one in San Bruno that exploded and killed eight people in 2010.
The company has identified almost 240 problematic pipeline segments, spanning nearly 47 miles, throughout northern and central California. Last year, a local pipeline failed during a pressure test causing a huge crater in a field.
PG&E says it plans to take care of the problematic pipelines over the next two years.
