Pacific Gas and Electric rolled out its $1 million scholarship program to Cal State Bakersfield.
On Tuesday, representatives from the utility made the announcement and helped students complete the application process.
The "Bright Minds" scholarship program will award scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $30,000 a year to high achieving, low income students.
"We understand the power of education to strengthen the communities that we're very privileged to serve. We also understand for us to have the skilled and talented workforce that we need to deliver safe, reliable, affordable gas and electric service, we need to be supporting the educational goals of the students that live within our service area," said Ezra Garret, Vice President of Community Relations for PG&E.
CSUB officials say more than 80% of its students rely on financial aid.
An eligible student must be at least 16 years old, be a high school senior or current undergraduate student, be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the 2012-2013 academic year, and live within the PG&E service area.
