The Bakersfield Police Department is still looking into an officer-involved shooting over the weekend.

According to police, officers Matthew Gregory and Dennis Eddy approached 17-year-old Albert Salazar and his 21-year-old friend, who are suspected gang members.

The two suspects ran away from the officers and that's when police say Salazar turned around and opened fire on the officers.

Police say one of the officers returned fire and the suspect was shot twice in the leg. The return shots wer fired by Officer Matthew Gregory.

"The subjects ran and during a foot pursuit, one of the suspects produced a firearm and shot at the officers," said Sgt. Jason Townsend.

Several people were inside the home at the time of the shootout, including a one-year-old child.

Neither officer was injured and Officer Grgeory was placed on routine, paid administrative leave pending the result of an internal investigation.

Salazar's 21-year-old friend has been detained pending an investigation.

So jbflyguy, at what point should the cops or anyone be allowed to defend themselves? Should it be if they see a gun, are fired on or hit? Seems from what the story has said one of the perps shot at officers first, then the cop fired back, guess the perp thouht he couldn't outrun a one legged cop.

The BPD shoots first, and asks questions later. Their internal review board ALWAYS deems it "justified". Six outta ten times it probably is, but our city police force are WAY to trigger happy. The cops are the criminals many times. Theyre arrogant and conduct themselves as though they are above the law. Im sick of it, and have zero respect or faith in the BPD.

We have totally lost the plot people. The criminals have all the rights and the police are so out of control they get NO respect and some don't deserve any.

ilcano, thats why it was the movies when the CO said do not shoot till fired upon. Only problem is you usually end up wounded or dead if you play that game in real life. Is that what you want the cops to do, wait till they catch a round before they can fire back? Don't get me wrong, I don't like alot of the posers on the police force but I will still back em when they are in a situation that could kill or maim them.

Could it also be that we have at least a couple cops that won't run & hide when a pos pulls a gun on them or tries to run them down? I'd still like to see who had the kill shots in the last few shootings.

Kern County outranks all but three counties statewide in officer involved shootings. Either we have a higher rate of contankorous criminals or higher rate of trigger happy cops. My bet is on the latter.

Ruffy, the officer has to be killed before he or she can return fire, at least that is the way some in this town look at it.

Which is what, wrong? One of them SHOT AT THE COPS, what else would it take to be justified? Good Grief.
