Officer-involved shooting leaves man in critical condition

The following is a news release from the Bakersfield Police Department:

On Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at approximately 12:05 a.m., the Bakersfield Police Department Communications Center started receiving calls of shots fired at 720 Terrace Way. Bakersfield Police Officers arrived on scene and canvassed the area for any subjects. As the officers were walking through the complex, they heard shots being fired. Officers then observed an adult male holding a rifle.

Officers identified themselves as police officers and ordered the suspect to drop the rifle. The suspect refused and fled from them. A foot pursuit ensued, during which an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck and taken to a local hospital with major injuries. The suspect is currently in critical condition.

A rifle was recovered.

There were no police officers injured during the incident. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.

Then again as the last report they did say he is brain dead, but I would say how could they tell the difference?

Hey nerdy these morons were shooting in town at hwy 58, maybe that is what they do in LA and get away with it in the hood but here they get shot before the idiots kill someone if we are lucky! As for his love ones they will do just fine with the great welfare system! And DR999 he could have shot a few more times to make sure or waited until he got closer and fired a few more shots and just put in his report that he moved!

This guy is 26 years old, has fathered at least 6 'ill mijos, and has already spent time in state prison for a weapons charge. Not exactly your model citizen. And to murph. It was dark, this suspect was running, and the got hit to stop him. Seems like pretty good marksmanship if you ask me.

he's a criminal with a gun that refused to follow orders & got shot, case closed! Officers are trained to shoot at the 10 ring not to wound in the arm, that only happens in movies or if he misses his target for some reason. You don't combat a suspect armed with a gun with a Tazer. The family can always move back to LA where they came from if they don't like the way things are done in Kern Co. I for one am glad our local Law Enforcement officers do such a good job of protecting the rest of us from people like this

The police man was doing his job. the man with gun could have shot some if he got away. You people blame police. they are damned if they do & damned if they don't. You want the job????

You don't think the officers in Kern County have proven they can shoot to kill, to say the least? The person who is in critically condition is still a man who shouldn't be made into a joke... Compassion is what everyone is lacking and the only thing the police need more practice is with their tazers or avoiding a lethal or kill shot as only last option! I don't know this man but I'm sure someone out there loves him and I'm sure someone is mourning for the tragic events that we dont know the details too but the respect if you any should be for the family and friends!

Ok the officer did hit him but he is alive for now, the officer needs to visit the range a little more often!
