Veterans helping veterans. That's the concept behind a new thrift store in downtown Bakersfield.

There's no sign on the building yet, but the old alterations shop on 21st and H Streets is now the Veterans Support Store, run by volunteers with American Legion Post 26.

Nothing sold here has a price tag.

Instead, shoppers are encouraged to make a fair offer, with all of the money going to help veterans through programs run by the American Legion.

"We need all the donations we can. Things are hard. They're hard for everyone, we know that," said Mike Brown, volunteer. "The vets are needing a lot of help and so are the people out there. We're trying to help the community as a whole, and this is a place they can come and try to swap and change things around and help us all."

The store, located at 1621 21st Street, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

In addition to donations, they're looking for volunteers to help with the pickup of large items.

They're also in need of a sign, which they haven't been able to afford.

If you would like to help, call 331-6045.
