According to the San Diego Coroner's Office, David and Karen Reis, a brother and sister from Bakersfield, were both shot to death along with another man, 31-year-old Matthew Saturley, in David Reis' Coronado condo. The fourth man, another fighter pilot, identified as John Robert Reeves committed suicide, according to the coroner.
San Diego County authorities say all four who were shot and another person went to a club in downtown San Diego on New Years Eve. When they returned to the condo, that's when the shooting occurred.
"We have no information of there being any kind of dispute that precipitated this event," says Captain Duncan Frasier, San Diego Sheriff's Department.
San Diego investigators say Navy pilot David Reis and his sister, Karen, went to a nightclub in downtown San Diego on New Years Eve.
David's roommate, John Robert Reeves, also a navy pilot, went with them. Police believe while they were out, Karen met 31-year-old Matthew Saturley. All four and another acquaintance returned to the condo
Investigators say Reeves went inside first, followed by Karen Reis and Saturley. That's when David Reis and the other man, who were talking outside, heard gunshots. Police say David went inside and the other man, still outside the condo, heard more gunshots and called 911.
Sheriff's homicide investigators aren't directly saying that Reeves shot the others, but they call David, Karen, and Saturley's deaths murders and Reeve's death a suicide. Detectives would not describe a motive for the killings.
"Anything is possible, but we have no confirmation if there was a relationship between them," added Frasier.
Investigators say Karen and Saturley had just met that night. Those who knew Saturley say he was still living with his wife in Chula Vista, but had filed for divorce on December 27th, which was also his 31st birthday. His neighbors say Saturley has two school-age children, one from his current wife, another from a previous marriage.
The Reis family is setting up a memorial scholarship at Garces High School in David and Karen's name. It's where they both graduated. Garces High School is holding a Celebration of Life on Friday at 11:00 a.m. on the football field. The gates open at 10:30 a.m. and the public is invited to attend.
Funeral arrangements have also been made for David and Karen Reis.
A rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Friday, January 6th at 7:30 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. Philips at 10 a.m. on January 7th. The public is invited to attend. A burial will then be held at Greenlawn Northeast Cemetery and a wake at Garces High School following the burial on Saturday
