More than 20 cats were killed Friday morning when a smoky fire damaged a house in a rural area outside Arvin. No people were hurt.

It happened on Judith Street, just north of Arvin.

Joy Kennedy told 17News she has been sheltering stray cats there for years and more than 20 were in the house when the fire started. Dozens of animals, dogs, birds and chickens, survived the fire.

She said the dead cats succumbed to the smoke.

Kern County Animal Control Director Guy Shaw was at the fire scene and said the animals appeared to have been well cared for before the fire.

Kennedy said she would bury the cats on her property.

She thought the fire may have been started by heater used to warm baby chickens. The fire department didn’t speculate Friday morning about a cause.

I have known Joy for several years now and she is one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. She will go out of her way to help anyone and any animal. She volunteers at the Kern Humane Society. She has found homes for numerous animals and has taken in many to have them spayed or neutered before placing them in homes. She is very caring and has helped people out with their animals when they could not afford to do so themselves. I personally have seen her care for dogs and cats of people she had just met. One incident was a dog that had puppies and the family could not afford to have her spayed. The dogs had mange and needed medical treatment. Joy did not know these people but was told of the situation and went to help the family. The end result was that the dog - Corndog - was spayed and is well now and living with her family. My heart goes out to Joy for all she is going through at this time.

My heart goes out to Ms. Kennedy. I, too, have lost my beloved pets in a fire, a dog and two cats that had been with me for 7 years, when the RV we lived in burned when the engine caught fire and exploded on night in early 2007. Anyone who has a heart big enough to encompass and shelter animals (assuming the animals are well-cared-for, and it seems Ms. Kennedy's were) is a hero in my book. As tragic as their deaths were, if it weren't for Ms. Kennedy, they may not have had any home or live at all. God Bless You, Ms. Kennedy!
