Abusing the most vulnerable.

Elder abuse is an all too common crime in Kern County and Thursday, abuse victim and Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney was in Bakersfield speaking out against the crime.

Rooney has made more than 200 movies during his long career as an actor, but when the limelight faded a shadow was cast over his personal life in the form of elder abuse.

"Think about elder abuse, and stop it," said Rooney.

It's estimated that only one in one hundred cases of elder abuse get reported.

Rooney says victims should not be afraid to speak out, and multiple organizations in Kern County are partnering to stop the abuse.

"Our main focus is to actually prevent and investigate crimes against seniors including elder abuse whether it be financial, physical emotional, even self neglect is included in the manner," said Interim Director of Aging Adult Services Lito Morillo.

Rooney knows elder abuse first hand.  He says his stepchildren Chris and Christina Aber took his identification cards and denied him basic necessities like medicine and food.  He says he even suffered physical and verbal abuse.

"I hope to God someone doesn't grab you by the neck and tell you to shut up."

Rooney and partnering organizations say awareness of the crime is important because somewhere down the road anyone could be a victim.

Two organizations in town actively fight against elder abuse and encourage you to call if you know or suspect elder abuse.

Aging and Adult Services can be reached at 868-1000.

The Alliance Against Violence and Sexual Assault can be reached at 327-1091.

IF society wants to stop elder abuse, why are assisted facility state licensing facility evaluations reports & violation investigation reports not available to the public on-line? Why don't we require assisted living facilities to post an evaluation placard at the front door as we door for restaurants & have copies of evaluations? Why don't we require all complaints against assisted living facilities be placed in the facility's file? Why don't the agencies that are suppose to protect elder know what the regulations are, specifically Title 22? Mickey Rooney is telling us to speak up against elder abuse. Although that is important, it is equally important that the agencies responsible for protecting elders take complaints seriously and do a complete through and unbiased investigation. My 'mother-in-law' had her locked front door of her home kicked in. Deputies responding to a 911 call allowed the intruders to take the victim after they agreed to compensate the Landlord $250 for their 'accidental' damage. The victim was taken to senior housing and the intruders lied to management saying she had no family and used the victim's funds to guard the victim 24 x 7. Next the victim's million dollars in cash was transferred to new accounts changing both ownership and beneficiaries in the process. Next new and radically different financial planning documents were prepared and 'signed'. Using these documents the victim was moved to assisted living facility with instructions of no phone calls, no visitors, no mail. Even clergy was barred from visiting victim. 11+ months later, the family (victim's live-in significant other, older sister and only child) are still not allowed to visit the victim. The victim is in hospice care and will likely die before the family is allowed to visit. Family is told this is strictly a civil manner and no crimes were committed. Currently, CA doesn't care about the elderly. Unfortunately, speaking up is only the first step and currently
