Mickey Rooney speaks out against elder abuse
Abusing the most vulnerable.
Elder abuse is an all too common crime in Kern County and Thursday, abuse victim and Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney was in Bakersfield speaking out against the crime.
Rooney has made more than 200 movies during his long career as an actor, but when the limelight faded a shadow was cast over his personal life in the form of elder abuse.
"Think about elder abuse, and stop it," said Rooney.
It's estimated that only one in one hundred cases of elder abuse get reported.
Rooney says victims should not be afraid to speak out, and multiple organizations in Kern County are partnering to stop the abuse.
"Our main focus is to actually prevent and investigate crimes against seniors including elder abuse whether it be financial, physical emotional, even self neglect is included in the manner," said Interim Director of Aging Adult Services Lito Morillo.
Rooney knows elder abuse first hand. He says his stepchildren Chris and Christina Aber took his identification cards and denied him basic necessities like medicine and food. He says he even suffered physical and verbal abuse.
"I hope to God someone doesn't grab you by the neck and tell you to shut up."
Rooney and partnering organizations say awareness of the crime is important because somewhere down the road anyone could be a victim.
Two organizations in town actively fight against elder abuse and encourage you to call if you know or suspect elder abuse.
