"Baby's moving ok? No contractions?"
"No."
"Pain?"
"No."

This used to be the only way Dr. Jonathan Bratter could check on his labor and delivery patients at Memorial Hospital Miramar.

And look at the readings from the fetal heart rate monitor.

Now all he has to do is open an app called "airstrip ob."

"It's impossible to be at the hospital 24 hours a day. So it allows me to have a more hands-on approach with my laboring patients even from a remote location," says Dr. Jonathan Bratter, obgyn.

This app provides the doctor with updated details.

"This patient is 1 to 2 centimeters dilated. She's 60 percent effaced."

The fetal strip lets him see the same information being printed on this paper, real time.

"We have maternal contractions down at the bottom. The orange line is the fetal heart rate and the white line just underneath is the maternal heart rate."

"Interpretation of a fetal heart rate tracing is one of the most important things that we do as obstetricians, so to be able to do it from any location that I'm at is a huge benefit to me," adds Dr. Bratter.

And he means any location. "Even on vacation in Colorado, I'm up on top of a mountain. I'm opening up and checking on patients that are in labor. If I did see something I was truly concerned about I would call the labor floor and the covering physician and say, 'hey, did you see this?'"

Amy Diaz is 31 weeks and her fluid started leaking. Dr. Bratter is monitoring her for any signs of preterm labor. The app gave Amy peace of mind. "Just to know that if he were to see something that was urgent he can come see me right away."
