The man who severely abused his dog by hitting her in the mouth with a golf club and burning her eyes with bleach, received his sentence Wednesday.

Back in November, Robert Gonzales was charged with felony animal cruelty. He pleaded no contest to the charges.

Although the prosecution wanted 16 months in prison for Gonzales, the judge sentenced him to eight months in county jail and three years probation.

"If he fails his probation he will then be looking at three years in prison."

Police say Gonzales tethered a dog named Lacey, to a tree at his home in southwest Bakersfield, then hit her in the mouth with a golf club and sprayed bleach in her eyes.

"One of the stipulations by him being placed on probation is that he cannot possess an animal during this probationary period, so obviously i am happy with that," said prosecutor Felicia Nagel.

During an impromptu news conference by the Public Health Department, we got an update on Lacey's condition.

"We're not here with Lacey and that's intentional because she is still very skiddish and very uncomfortable around people and animals and we did not want to subject her to stress," said Matt Constantine, Director, Kern County Public Health.

Lacey's eyes badly burned by the bleach was a large concern. But, thanks to a team of supporters from Animal Control, doctors performing free surgeries on her eyes and a foster family, she's nearly made a full recovery.

"Huge, huge, huge difference. She looks so much better, her eyes are clear, her fur grown back from the burns. I mean it was all gone and she just looks so much better."

The court has also required Gonzales to go through animal abuse specific counseling.

Judi Daunell with the Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelter Foundation, explains. "This is a relatively new concept, but rather than just your run of the mill anger management counseling, regular counseling, this program is specific for animal abusers."

Constantine says they were able to raise more than $13,000 in Lacey's name to not only provide care for her, but to other abused animals as well.

Who knows, he might have what he has coming to him while sitting in jail. Seriously, I wouldn't want to be asked why I am locked up. Especially in a room full of homies. Let alone have them find out. Wow, just sitting here thinking about it, I am scared and embarrased for him. I am Glad I ain't in his shoes. Oh well, anyways it so good to see how the little doggie is doing. She so precious.

Don't feel too bad, almost every murder in this town has the perps previous felony crimes "dismissed for the furtherment of justice", I'm surprised they gave anytime for a dog when the Da won't do anything on a gangmember with priors lol

Though it may not be enough time in jail, at least the justice system recognized the true horror this man did to an innocent animal. This dog will suffer throughout the rest of her life. I am saddened by this. I would've like to see him hit with a gold club and his eyes burned with bleach. It makes you think how he treats human beings!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robert Gonzales is nothing but a waste of life and I'm offended that I have to share the air I breathe with him. For a grown man to beat a small defenseless (tied up at that!) animal with such malice and disregard is very frightening. There is a special place in hell for people like Robert Gonzales =) 8 months in jail is laughable but it's better than nothing. I am ecstatic that more and more animal abuse cases are ending with jail/prison sentences, instead of just probation or just counseling. Bless Lacy's heart for fighting for her life and surviving. She is an angel and I hope she soon finds a very loving forever home!!

LACY is a very smart dog keeping a watchful eye on humans...however in our defense, gonzales is not human. GOD writes all this down. Thanks to all the people involved in LACY's recovery.

next time it might be a child. They should have gave him the Max. He wouldn't last in prison , so they are protecting him!

I strongly feel that the sentence was a mer slap on the wrist. He deserved the maximum time allowed by law. Actually, he really deserved to have done to him exactly what he inflicted on the sweet little dog. I hope he gets a taste of his own medicine in prison (or jail) so that he can experience what it feels like to severely injured. He is the devil himself--may he roast in Hell and all those who hurt poor defenseless animals as well. I have been waiting patiently for the case to go to court, ever since I heard of this appalling incident. It breaks my heart every time I hear of cruelty to animls--and there seems to be plenty these days. Really, the laws need to made more stringent for animal abuse, definitely some REAL CONSEQUENCES. 8 months is a disgrace. He should have received the maximum of 16 months plus 10 years probation. To me this is a light sentence. May he really get what he deserves--what goes around comes around.
