Monday, the surgical team who volunteered to help a Bakersfield man get his life back, answered questions about the procedure.

Lee Lyle spent a year and a half without a piece of his skull, after a hit and run crash while he was on his motorcycle.

Surgeons removed a piece of his skull to stop the bleeding on his brain. They placed the bone inside his abdomen to preserve it and prevent infection.

The plan was to later remove that bone and re-attach it to Lyle's skull.

But Lyle's disability benefits ran out, and he has no health insurance.

Kern Medical Center wanted Lyle to apply for Medi-Cal Insurance before they moved forward with the operation.

However, several weeks ago, after a 17 News reported about Lyle's situation a Bakersfield Surgeon came forward and offered to do the operation for free.

Everyone involved says they are just happy for lee Lyle.

"Just seeing him smile and looking forward to the future instead of falling backward, it's great, it's wonderful," said Lyle's daughter-in-law Tabitha Lyle.

"It's a very small token of what I can do to give back," said Dr. Vipul Dev at Monday's news conference.

"I feel great, feel great, hardly any pain what so ever, very very minimal pain," said Lee Lyle.

Lyle is recovering well and even went home Monday.
