A man has been hospitalized with burn injuries after trying to save his animals from a fire at his home in east Bakersfield.

The fire broke out last night around 7:30 in the 12 thousand block of Edison Highway.  Fire officials say it may have started in an unattended barbecue between a travel trailer and a vacant home.

The flames quickly spread and a man and woman in the trailer managed to get out safely.  The man, however, suffered burns to his hands when he ran back to get his pet rabbits.

One rabbit died but the other two survived.  Damage to the trailer and vacant home is estimated at 34 thousand dollars.
